In this Lenten season, what do we hear in Pilate’s words, “Behold, the man”? In what ways do we participate in the crowd’s mockery of Jesus, living as though comfort, money, political security, or getting our way are our true masters?
Christians often talk about the need to avoid reductionism, especially scientific naturalism. But what about the opposite extreme—isn’t it dangerous also to focus too little on science, and let ourselves be shaped too much by superstition or ‘traditional’ beliefs?
Entering this season of Advent, let us return again and again to the stories of God’s deliverance of Israel and to the Psalms that recount them. Let us inhabit these ancient songs, allowing their words to become our words as we respond to the enemies we encounter and as we reflect on the coming of the Deliverer.
