Articles by Roland Hoksbergen

Roland Hoksbergen earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame and recently retired from Calvin College, where he served as Professor of Economics and director of the International Development Studies program.   He lived for seven years in various countries of Central America and from 1986-89 was the founding director of the Latin American Studies Program of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities.  His research and writing focus on development issues, including civil society, environmental sustainability, NGO partnerships, the role of the private sector in development assistance strategies, and transformational development.  Much of his work explores the relevance of Christian faith to issues of economics and development.  His articles have appeared in World Development, Development in Practice, the Journal of Developing Areas and Faith & Economics as well as in handbooks and encyclopedias of development.  His 2012 book, Serving God Globally (Baker Academic) provides advice for young Christians exploring careers in international development.
