I think that we, just like the disciples, try to find our fill with bread that will not sustain us. We live for the “big experiences” in our faith – the mission trips, the conversion experiences, the prayers with first time believers and the miracles that we see in our daily lives.
What do we do with texts of joy in times when our spirits need lament? Do we ignore them?
We all are called to speak the benediction on our hearts. We are called to end every interaction with love, compassion, and hope, so that these blessings too will become known, embodied, and lived out throughout God’s amazing world.
Whatever the disaster, whatever the horror, whatever we face, may we hold to the truth that God so loves this lost and broken world that God gave an only son to live in it, love it, and save it.
Lord, hear our prayer, for the wounds that cannot be bound up, for the losses that cannot be fathomed, and for those who fear being forgotten.
My fellow believers, let us beware that we do not become complacent and neglect our roles as Christ’s followers.
